Description
Crater Lake Loop is a 36.2-mile route that utilizes the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) and the Crater Lake Rim Trail to form a scenic loop that can be completed as an epic day trek or enjoyed as an overnight backpacking trip. The route begins from Mazama Campground and takes place entirely within Crater Lake National Park. The route crosses fairly flat terrain with some rolling hills and little elevation gain or loss. The loop is easily accessible for most people and has a number of road and trail junctions that make it possible to shorten the distance if needed.Take the PCT Spur Trail north from Mazama Village to the PCT. Enjoy the views of the mountains surrounding Crater Lake as you traverse gentle pine forests. On the east side of West Rim Drive, the PCT crosses the Rim Trail. Follow the Rim Trail south and enjoy a traverse along the caldera rim of Crater Lake. There are several scenic vistas along the Rim Trail, as well as informative graphs that detail the region's geology and history. Leave the Rim Trail at the south west end of Crater Lake and follow Dutton Creek Trail southwest. The Dutton Creek Trail will take you back to the PCT. Take the PCT south and retrace your steps to Mazama Village. WATERThere isn't much water in the Crater Lake backcountry and many sources run dry by late July or early August. Plan to bring sufficient food and water with you. Water taken from creeks should be treated before being consumed.CAMPING AND PERMITSBackcountry permits are required year-round for all overnight trips in the park. Permits are not required for day hiking. For information about backcountry camping and obtaining a permit please visit https://www.nps.gov/crla/planyourvisit/backcountry_camping.htm. REGULATIONSCamping is prohibited in pullouts, picnic areas, and parking lots within the national park. Bicycles are not allowed on the PCT and are prohibited in certain areas of Crater Lake National Park. ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONCrater Lake National ParkMazama Campground
