Description
The JF Gregory Wetlands Loop trail is a 3.2 mile mostly-paved path that parallels a series of canoe-friendly waterways near the Ogeechee River. The path is family-friendly, making a mostly shady loop route that passes exercise stations, an observation deck, and several picnic tables and benches along its course. Accessible either from JF Gregory Park or a dedicated parking area adjacent to Richmond Hill City Hall and the Wetlands Education Center building, the path passes features such as picnic tables, exercise equipment, and an observation deck. The trail remains flat, and it is not uncommon to see families walking or riding bicycles along the path. There is a dedicated put in point for paddled watercraft near the trail entrance. The land is part of a former rice plantation once owned by Henry Ford. Ford was instrumental in introducing a network of dikes to the area to encourage agriculture. Walkers who keep an eye out may be able to see alligators in the waterways, as well as fiddler crabs along the banks. There are no amenities along the path, however there are bathrooms, water and covered picnic pavilions located in JF Gregory Park.
