Features

Pokegama Lake is noted for its scenic beauty and many islands. It is part of a navigable chain of lakes which includes: Little Jay Gould Lake, Jay Gould Lake and Blackwater Lake. The Mississippi River flows into Blackwater Lake and outlets at the Pokegama Dam Recreation Area just west of Grand Rapids. The lake receives heavy recreational boating pressure during summer, but surprisingly light fishing pressure. A consumption advisory has been placed on northern pike, walleye and sucker. Check the state fish consumption advisory brochure for details.

Forage

Smelt, perch, tullibee (cisco), sucker and redhorse comprise the forage base. Smelt have become an important forage species.
