A must do route for the area handpicked by local experts.
No permit is required. The lot on NY 73 fills early in summer; overflow may require a road walk of several hundred yards to the trail.
Path Type
There and Back
The route begins and ends at Cascade Trailhead and reaches the summit of Porter Mountain (4,059'), about 2.5 miles each way.
From the register, the trail dips and stays moderate, then crosses a stream near 0.3 miles and climbs steeply over rocky terrain, with bare-rock slab in places, to a ridge near 1.2 miles. At about 2 miles, reach a Y junction and turn right toward Porter; left leads about 0.3 mile to Cascade's open summit. Drop, then climb 0.5 mile over rocky tread to Porter's summit, a large rock with views of the Great Range and Cascade.
The trail is busy in summer. Descend the same way; the steep rock is slippery when wet. In winter, snowshoes are required and microspikes help on the slabs.
