Description
The route begins and ends at the Owl Head Lookout Trailhead on Route 9N, after a bushwhacking loop to the trail-less Green Mountain summit. From the Owl Head Lookout Trailhead, follow the North Trail south and west into the Giant Mountain Wilderness. The trail is gentle for the first mile to a crossing of Slide Brook before beginning a moderate climb through mixed forest. At 2.5 miles, bypass the Owl Head Lookout spur trail on the left and continue straight. At around 5.0 miles, branch off of the North Trail and begin a bushwhacking climb up the south face of Green Mountain. Herd trails occasionally exist, but generally don't continue the entire way up, so bushwhacking and navigation skills are required. Beware of deadfall and the occasional cliff to navigate around and over. Although the summit of Green Mountain is wooded, there are occasional views of Giant Mountain to the south from some of the clearings. For a more gradual descent, head to the west and descend the ridge, continuing to bushwhack on the way down. Join back up with the North Trail and head to the east, following it all the way back to the trailhead.
