Old Speck Mountain via Eyebrow Trail and Appalachian Trail

This route starts and ends at the Appalachian Trailhead on ME Route 26 in Grafton Notch State Park, climbing via the Eyebrow Trail and returning via the Appalachian Trail. From the trailhead, follow the white-blazed Appalachian Trail south for 0.1 mile to its junction with the orange-blazed Eyebrow Trail, then turn onto the Eyebrow Trail. The trail climbs steeply, gaining roughly 1,200 vertical feet in about a mile on a series of ladders, steel rungs, and a cable-assisted rock face, to a broad ledge shelf known as the Eyebrow at roughly 2,900 feet, atop an 800-foot cliff with exposed views back down Grafton Notch. Beyond the Eyebrow, the trail continues climbing through spruce-fir forest to rejoin the Appalachian Trail on the main ridge. At around 3.1 miles, the Appalachian Trail meets the Mahoosuc Trail. Turn left (south) and continue toward Old Speck's wooded summit and observation tower, about 0.2 miles away. To descend, return to the Appalachian Trail and follow it all the way down to the trailhead, bypassing the Eyebrow Trail's ladders entirely. The full route covers approximately 6.5 miles with about 3,058 vertical feet of cumulative elevation gain.
