View Trail Map in AppAccessing this route typically begins near Walter's Cabin, which is managed by the 10th Mountain Division Hut Association and requires advanced reservations.
During the summer and fall, Walter's Cabin can be reached via Shrine Pass Road (Forest Service Road 16), a graded dirt road starting from Vail Pass (Exit 190 on Interstate 70). A high-clearance vehicle is recommended but not always necessary.
During the winter and spring, the road is closed to wheeled vehicles, and the cabin is only accessible via a 2.7-mile winter trek on skis or snowshoes from the Vail Pass winter recreation area. A Vail Pass Winter Recreation Area fee or day-use pass is required for parking and access during the winter season.

Point to Point
This moderately easy 3.5-mile round-trip hike begins at Walter's Cabin, one of the three Shrine Mountain Inns located near Shrine Pass at an elevation of approximately 11,200 feet. The trail ascends through lush subalpine meadows, which transform into vibrant fields of wildflowers during July and August, featuring lupine, columbine, and paintbrush.
As the trail climbs toward the top of Shrine Ridge, hikers are rewarded with sweeping views of the surrounding Rocky Mountains. From the ridge's high point at 11,894 feet, prominent sights include the jagged Gore Range to the north, the Tenmile Range to the east, and the Mount of the Holy Cross to the west. The route is highly recommended for guests staying at the cabin, providing a relatively short but deeply rewarding alpine experience.
