Shrine Mountain from Walter's Cabin

This moderately easy 3.5-mile round-trip hike begins at Walter's Cabin, one of the three Shrine Mountain Inns located near Shrine Pass at an elevation of approximately 11,200 feet. The trail ascends through lush subalpine meadows, which transform into vibrant fields of wildflowers during July and August, featuring lupine, columbine, and paintbrush. As the trail climbs toward the top of Shrine Ridge, hikers are rewarded with sweeping views of the surrounding Rocky Mountains. From the ridge's high point at 11,894 feet, prominent sights include the jagged Gore Range to the north, the Tenmile Range to the east, and the Mount of the Holy Cross to the west. The route is highly recommended for guests staying at the cabin, providing a relatively short but deeply rewarding alpine experience.

Walter's Cabin is one of three communal cabins making up the Shrine Mountain Inns, situated on a private inholding within the White River National Forest. Built by Chuck and Sharon Barlow, the cabins are named after family members and friends, with Walter's Cabin dedicated to Walter Barlow. The inns operate in partnership with the 10th Mountain Division Hut Association, which was established to honor the legacy of the US Army's 10th Mountain Division alpine soldiers who trained nearby at Camp Hale during World War II.
