Huron Peak via North Huron Trailhead

No rating
A 9.4-mile round trip to one of the Collegiate Peaks' most rewarding summits, climbing from an old mining corridor near the ghost towns of Winfield and Vicksburg to a broad basin below Huron's north face. The final push crosses a cairned boulder field before a steep, direct climb to the top, with close views of Browns Peak the whole way up the basin. The summit is regularly cited as one of the best viewpoints in the Sawatch Range, looking out over the Three Apostles, Ice Mountain, and the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness.

Description
The route begins and ends at North Huron Trailhead, on Clear Creek Road (CR 390) near Winfield, and reaches the summit of Huron Peak (14,006'). From the trailhead, climb a series of switchbacks through forest, reaching treeline at about 3.8 miles (11,900'), with the first clear views of Huron Peak ahead. Continue across the basin below Huron's northwest slopes; Browns Peak (13,524') is visible to the left, Huron to the right. At the far edge of the trees, the trail exits into a boulder field; locate cairns and angle east through the boulders toward the trees on the far side. Continue across the basin, then begin the steep climb up Huron's north slopes, gaining about 1,600 vertical feet over the final 1.2 miles to the summit. Descend the same route. The boulder field is easy to lose in poor visibility; keep an eye on the cairn line on the way down. Huron Peak can also be reached from South Winfield Trailhead, closer to Winfield.
