Bear-resistant food canisters are mandatory for overnight storage throughout the John Muir Wilderness.
The trailhead is accessed via Sawmill Creek Road, west of US Highway 395. The final dirt section of this road is sandy, rocky, and deeply rutted, making a high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicle highly recommended. There are no parking fees at the trailhead.

Split Mountain via Sawmill Pass is a demanding 55.3-mile out-and-back route located west of Independence, California. The trail leads to the summit of Split Mountain, which stands at 14,064 feet as one of California's fourteeners. The route features rugged Sierra Nevada terrain, sweeping alpine views, and significant physical challenges, with a total elevation gain of approximately 16,584 feet.
The trek begins on the Sawmill Pass Trail, climbing steeply to connect with the Pacific Crest Trail and John Muir Trail (PCT/JMT). After heading north along the PCT/JMT, the route diverges east toward the western slope of Split Mountain. The ascent to the summit proceeds via the north slope, involving a Class 2 scramble over talus slopes starting near an unnamed lake. This lake serves as a frequent overnight camping location for backpackers completing the route over multiple days.
