Mount Magazine State High Point

No rating
A short loop to the top of Arkansas from the mountain's lodge side, climbing through oak-hickory forest to circle the summit of Signal Hill before dropping back to the same trailhead. It's an easy outing by mileage, but it puts you on the one piece of ground in the state that nothing else beats.

Description
The route begins and ends at the Old Lodge Site trailhead on Lodge Drive, near Mount Magazine Lodge, forming a loop of about 1.8 miles. From the trailhead, follow the marked path north; the grade climbs steadily but gently through oak-hickory forest. At 0.4 miles, reach a junction where the trail forks into the summit loop; bear right, continuing to climb past the 2,625-foot contour. Around 0.8 miles, the trail crests the north side of the loop and switches back sharply, curving south along the west side of Signal Hill. Watch for the spur into the interior of the loop leading to the summit marker — a roughly 400-square-foot stone map of Arkansas set into the ground at the mountain's highest point. From the summit, continue on the loop as it curves east and then south, passing back below the 2,625-foot contour on the opposite side of the ridge from the outbound leg. At the junction near 1.4 miles, close the loop and retrace the original 0.4-mile spur south back to the Old Lodge Site trailhead.
