Trail Overview

Trail Ss1051 begins off Haekel Road, passing a fun dune play area near Ss1070. This is a wide, point-to-point gravel route with sandy berms lining portions of the trail. The road crosses multiple washes, so use caution -- especially during or after storms. Flash flooding and washouts are possible in wet conditions. There are also a few ruts along the route, so maintain controlled speeds. Early along the trail, you'll cross a cattle guard and pass a corral and tank at the intersection with Ss1037. Continue past the corral and stay right to remain on Ss1051. As you head east toward the mountains, the surface transitions from sand to gravel. The trail eventually enters State Trust Land on the east side; a valid permit is required. East side conditions: vegetation becomes denser on the east side, with desert creosote, tall chollas, and prickly pear lining the route. The sandy berm transitions into a larger rock berm as elevation gradually increases. While there are a few ruts and minor washouts, there are no technical obstacles. The east end becomes bumpier but remains manageable. You will encounter a gate near a corral on the eastern side. Beyond the gate, the trail becomes a gravel/dirt road with additional ruts and washouts. Watch your speed to avoid suspension damage. Near the end of the trail, you will cross a wash that may be impassable in poor weather conditions.
