Trail Overview
Sawmill Gap Cutoff offers a well-traveled path into the scenic heart of the Eastern Sierra backcountry. This very sandy trail, approximately 1.5 vehicles wide, winds its way through tall pine forests with dramatic views of the Mammoth Crest and surrounding peaks. One section of the route becomes a narrow shelf road, clinging to the hillside and offering expansive views into the valley below. Due to its popularity, this trail sees heavy traffic from off-roaders, hikers, and campers, so caution and courtesy are encouraged. Spur trails branch off frequently, giving curious explorers plenty of side routes to investigate. Dispersed campsites are scattered throughout the area, but users are reminded to pack out all trash and help preserve the forest environment. Wildlife is common here -- deer sightings are frequent, and black bears are known to roam the region, especially near campsites. Keep food secured and be bear-aware at all times.

Difficulty
Trail is considered a moderately difficult route, mainly due to deep sand, ruts, and its exposed shelf road section. While it doesn't require technical rock crawling, high-clearance 4WD is strongly recommended. The sand can get soft and loose, especially in dry conditions, making airing down tires helpful for traction and comfort. The trail's width and visibility are generally good, but tight corners near drop-offs require focus. This trail is a great choice for adventurous drivers looking for scenic views with a bit of a challenge.
