Trail Overview
Racetrack via Hunter Mtn
This trail is located inside Death Valley National Park. It's known for its desert and mountain scenery and terrain. Don't miss the old mining camp and Racetrack Playa. Street-legal vehicles only, and there is a park fee to enter.
History
The Lost Burro Mine operated off and on between 1907 and 1938 under different ownership. It was one of the richest gold mines in the area. Mystery of the moving rocks: Some scientists think the moving rocks at the Racetrack are simply pushed by the wind when the playa is wet. Others think the surface must also be icy.
Getting There
From Panamint Springs, go west 13.8 miles on Hwy. 190 to well-marked Saline Valley Road on right. From Lone Pine, take Hwy. 190 east about 35 miles. To start loop at Wpt. 04, head south on Racetrack Valley Road (lots of washboard) about 26 miles from Grapevine Station.
