Elden Mountain, Schultz Pass
This area is in recovery from fire damage, so it is less scenic on the north side. You'll get some great views of Flagstaff once you reach the top of Eiden Mountain. This trail is popular with hikers and mountain bikers, and most trails also allow dirt bikes. There are a lot of camping options available, but fire restrictions are in place, so please take note of these postings along the trail. Unlicensed vehicles are allowed once the pavement ends on Elden Mountain, but not on Schultz Pass Road.
The Schultz fire burned from June 20 to July 13, 2010. It cost nearly 7 million dollars and involved nearly 600 fire fighters. The cause was determined to be an improperly abandoned campfire. Heavy rains following the fire lead to additional erosion and road damage.
