Public lands comprise 1,187 square miles (28%) of the total land covered by this hunt area. The greater region is best serviced by Casper, Douglas, and Mills. The elevation of the region ranges from a low of 4,500 feet to a high of 9,200 feet above sea level. Wildfires have burned nearly 2,063 acres here in the last two years, providing opportunities for new vegetation and attracting a variety of wildlife. This area is a gateway to these forested areas: Medicine Bow National Forest. Additionally, 71 sites are open to the public for access to managed private lands.
