Unit 1 regulates hunting opportunities for deer in Utah and covers 8,974 square miles. Public lands comprise 3,339 square miles (38%) of the total land covered by this wildlife management unit. The greater region is best serviced by West Valley City, Ogden, and Layton. The elevation of the region ranges from a low of 4,200 feet to a high of 9,800 feet above sea level. Wildfires have burned nearly 28,421 acres here in the last two years, providing opportunities for new vegetation and attracting a variety of wildlife. There are 1 trailheads that provide public gateways to these forested areas: Caribou National Forest, Sawtooth National Forest. Additionally, 75 sites are open to the public for access to managed private lands.
