Unit 1 regulates hunting opportunities for goose in South Dakota and covers 57,862 square miles. Public lands comprise 14,266 square miles (25%) of the total land covered by this hunt unit. The greater region is best serviced by Sioux Falls, Downtown Rapid City, and Aberdeen. The elevation of the region ranges from a low of 1,000 feet to a high of 7,100 feet above sea level. Wildfires have burned nearly 20,330 acres here in the last two years, providing opportunities for new vegetation and attracting a variety of wildlife. There are 24 trailheads that provide public gateways to these forested areas: Black Hills National Forest, Custer National Forest. Additionally, 6 sites are open to the public for access to managed private lands.
