Unit ST1 regulates hunting opportunities for deer in South Dakota and covers 77,120 square miles. Public lands comprise 20,765 square miles (27%) of the total land covered by this hunt unit. The greater region is best serviced by Sioux Falls, Downtown Rapid City, and Aberdeen. The elevation of the region ranges from a low of 1,000 feet to a high of 7,100 feet above sea level. Wildfires have burned nearly 23,407 acres here in the last two years, providing opportunities for new vegetation and attracting a variety of wildlife. This area contains 87 campgrounds, and 9 public fishing access sites. There are 80 trailheads that provide public gateways to these forested and wilderness areas: Black Hills National Forest, Custer National Forest, Badlands Wilderness, Black Elk Wilderness. Additionally, 10 sites are open to the public for access to managed private lands.
