Unit BD1 regulates hunting opportunities for deer in South Dakota and covers 887 square miles. Public lands comprise 683 square miles (78%) of the total land covered by this hunt unit. The greater region is best serviced by Downtown Spearfish, and Tilford. The elevation of the region ranges from a low of 2,800 feet to a high of 7,100 feet above sea level. Wildfires have burned nearly 4,479 acres here in the last two years, providing opportunities for new vegetation and attracting a variety of wildlife. This area contains 27 campgrounds, and 2 public fishing access sites. There are 35 trailheads that provide public gateways to these forested and wilderness areas: Black Hills National Forest, Black Elk Wilderness.
