Unit 2 regulates hunting opportunities for bighorn sheep, sheep in South Dakota and covers 873 square miles. Public lands comprise 593 square miles (68%) of the total land covered by this hunt unit. The greater region is best serviced by Wind Cave Visitors Center, and Sanator. The elevation of the region ranges from a low of 3,200 feet to a high of 6,900 feet above sea level. Wildfires have burned nearly 1,600 acres here in the last two years, providing opportunities for new vegetation and attracting a variety of wildlife. There are 15 trailheads that provide public gateways to these forested and wilderness areas: Black Hills National Forest, Black Elk Wilderness.
