Public lands comprise 768 square miles (67%) of the total land covered by this wildlife management unit. The greater region is best serviced by John Day, Prairie City, and Canyon City. The elevation of the region ranges from a low of 2,800 feet to a high of 8,800 feet above sea level. There are 23 trailheads that provide public gateways to these forested and wilderness areas: Malheur National Forest, Aldrich Mountain Wilderness Study Area, Black Canyon Wilderness, Strawberry Mountain Wilderness.
