The 39 METOLIUS unit, wildlife management unit regulates hunting opportunities for wildlife in Oregon and covers 668 square miles. Public lands comprise 541 square miles (81%) of the total land covered by this wildlife management unit. The greater region is best serviced by Redmond, Terrebonne, and Sisters. The elevation of the region ranges from a low of 1,600 feet to a high of 10,200 feet above sea level. Wildfires have burned nearly 2,092 acres here in the last two years, providing opportunities for new vegetation and attracting a variety of wildlife. This area contains 49 campgrounds, and 2 public fishing access sites. There are 23 trailheads that provide public gateways to these forested and wilderness areas: Deschutes National Forest, Willamette National Forest, Mount Jefferson Wilderness, Mount Washington Wilderness, Three Sisters Wilderness.
