The 28 APPLEGATE unit, wildlife management unit regulates hunting opportunities for wildlife in Oregon and covers 1,325 square miles. Public lands comprise 763 square miles (58%) of the total land covered by this wildlife management unit. The greater region is best serviced by Medford, Ashland, and Central Point. The elevation of the region ranges from a low of 900 feet to a high of 7,400 feet above sea level. Wildfires have burned nearly 62 acres here in the last two years, providing opportunities for new vegetation and attracting a variety of wildlife. This area contains 29 campgrounds, and 2 public fishing access sites. There are 62 trailheads that provide public gateways to these forested and wilderness areas: Klamath National Forest, Rogue River National Forest, Siskiyou National Forest, Red Buttes Wilderness.
