The Western Deer region regulates hunting opportunities for deer in North Carolina and covers 8,457 square miles. Public lands comprise 4,327 square miles (52%) of the total land covered by this game management unit. The greater region is best serviced by Downtown Asheville, Hickory, and Shelby. The elevation of the region ranges from a low of 500 feet to a high of 6,600 feet above sea level. Wildfires have burned nearly 77,032 acres here in the last two years, providing opportunities for new vegetation and attracting a variety of wildlife. There are 52 trailheads that provide public gateways to these forested and wilderness areas: Chattahoochee National Forest, Cherokee National Forest, Nantahala National Forest, Pisgah National Forest, Sumter National Forest, Citico Creek Wilderness, Ellicott Rock Wilderness, Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock Wilderness, Linville Gorge Wilderness, Middle Prong Wilderness, Shining Rock Wilderness, Southern Nantahala Wilderness. Additionally, 19 sites are open to the public for access to managed private lands.
