Unit 24 regulates hunting opportunities for big game in New Mexico and covers 1,511 square miles. Public lands comprise 717 square miles (48%) of the total land covered by this game management unit. The greater region is best serviced by Gila. The elevation of the region ranges from a low of 4,400 feet to a high of 10,000 feet above sea level. Wildfires have burned nearly 166 acres here in the last two years, providing opportunities for new vegetation and attracting a variety of wildlife. There are 20 trailheads that provide public gateways to these forested and wilderness areas: Gila National Forest, Aldo Leopold Wilderness, Gila Wilderness. Additionally, 1 site is open to the public for access to managed private lands.
