Unit 16A regulates hunting opportunities for big game in New Mexico and covers 645 square miles. Public lands comprise 640 square miles (100%) of the total land covered by this game management unit. The greater region is best serviced by Alma, Mogollon, and Reserve. The elevation of the region ranges from a low of 5,000 feet to a high of 9,800 feet above sea level. Wildfires have burned nearly 7,400 acres here in the last two years, providing opportunities for new vegetation and attracting a variety of wildlife. There are 15 trailheads that provide public gateways to these forested and wilderness areas: Apache National Forest, Gila National Forest, Gila Wilderness.
