Zone 10 regulates hunting opportunities for bear in New Mexico and covers 30,011 square miles. Public lands comprise 17,009 square miles (57%) of the total land covered by this game management unit. The greater region is best serviced by Albuquerque, Las Cruces, and Pajarito. The elevation of the region ranges from a low of 3,700 feet to a high of 11,600 feet above sea level. Wildfires have burned nearly 89,174 acres here in the last two years, providing opportunities for new vegetation and attracting a variety of wildlife. There are 110 trailheads that provide public gateways to these forested and wilderness areas: Apache National Forest, Cibola National Forest, Coronado National Forest, Gila National Forest, Aldo Leopold Wilderness, Apache Kid Wilderness, Baker Canyon Wilderness Study Area, Blue Range Wilderness, Bosque del Apache (Chupadera Unit) Wilderness, Bosque del Apache (Indian Well Unit) Wilderness, Bosque del Apache (Little San Pascual Unit) Wilderness, Cebolla Wilderness, Gila Wilderness, Peloncillo Mountains Wilderness, West Malpais Wilderness, Withington Wilderness. Additionally, 25 sites are open to the public for access to managed private lands.
