Zone 1 regulates hunting opportunities for bear in New Mexico and covers 8,850 square miles. Public lands comprise 5,213 square miles (59%) of the total land covered by this game management unit. The greater region is best serviced by Santa Fe, Farmington, and Los Alamos. The elevation of the region ranges from a low of 5,100 feet to a high of 11,500 feet above sea level. Wildfires have burned nearly 570 acres here in the last two years, providing opportunities for new vegetation and attracting a variety of wildlife. This area contains 38 campgrounds, and 7 public fishing access sites.
