The Hat Creek unit regulates hunting opportunities for elk in Nebraska and covers 2,106 square miles. Public lands comprise 315 square miles (15%) of the total land covered by this hunt unit. The greater region is best serviced by Mitchell, and Crawford. The elevation of the region ranges from a low of 3,500 feet to a high of 5,200 feet above sea level. Wildfires have burned nearly 1,471 acres here in the last two years, providing opportunities for new vegetation and attracting a variety of wildlife. There are 14 trailheads that provide public gateways to these forested and wilderness areas: Nebraska National Forest, Soldier Creek Wilderness. Additionally, 36 sites are open to the public for access to managed private lands.
