The General district regulates hunting opportunities for turkey in Montana and covers 98,347 square miles. Public lands comprise 36,935 square miles (38%) of the total land covered by this hunt district. The greater region is best serviced by Billings, Missoula, and Great Falls. The elevation of the region ranges from a low of 1,200 feet to a high of 12,600 feet above sea level. Wildfires have burned nearly 59,274 acres here in the last two years, providing opportunities for new vegetation and attracting a variety of wildlife. This area contains 176 campgrounds, and 203 public fishing access sites.
