The Trapping District 1 trapping district regulates hunting opportunities for trapping in Montana and covers 13,347 square miles. Public lands comprise 11,100 square miles (84%) of the total land covered by this hunt district. The greater region is best serviced by Lake Mary Ronan. The elevation of the region ranges from a low of 2,000 feet to a high of 10,400 feet above sea level. Wildfires have burned nearly 34,350 acres here in the last two years, providing opportunities for new vegetation and attracting a variety of wildlife. This area contains 94 campgrounds, and 44 public fishing access sites. There are 155 trailheads that provide public gateways to these forested and wilderness areas: Coeur d'Alene National Forest, Flathead National Forest, Kaniksu National Forest, Kootenai National Forest, Lewis and Clark National Forest, Lolo National Forest, Bob Marshall Wilderness, Cabinet Mountains Wilderness, Great Bear Wilderness, Mission Mountains Wilderness, Rattlesnake Wilderness, Scapegoat Wilderness, Ten Lakes Wilderness Study Area. Additionally, 58 sites are open to the public for access to managed private lands.
