District 520 regulates hunting opportunities for black bear in Montana and covers 2,951 square miles. Public lands comprise 1,308 square miles (45%) of the total land covered by this hunt district. The greater region is best serviced by Red Lodge, Columbus, and Absarokee. The elevation of the region ranges from a low of 3,400 feet to a high of 12,600 feet above sea level. This area contains 10 campgrounds, and 19 public fishing access sites. There are 26 trailheads that provide public gateways to these forested and wilderness areas: Custer National Forest, Gallatin National Forest, Shoshone National Forest, Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness. Additionally, 29 sites are open to the public for access to managed private lands.
