District 316 regulates hunting opportunities for black bear in Montana and covers 3,930 square miles. Public lands comprise 2,618 square miles (67%) of the total land covered by this hunt district. The greater region is best serviced by Divide. The elevation of the region ranges from a low of 4,000 feet to a high of 11,200 feet above sea level. Wildfires have burned nearly 56 acres here in the last two years, providing opportunities for new vegetation and attracting a variety of wildlife. This area contains 26 campgrounds, and 17 public fishing access sites. There are 22 trailheads that provide public gateways to these forested and wilderness areas: Beaverhead National Forest, Bitterroot National Forest, Deerlodge National Forest, Salmon National Forest, Targhee National Forest, Anaconda Pintler Wilderness, Eighteen Mile Wilderness Study Area, Farlin Creek Wilderness Study Area, Henneberry Bridge Wilderness Study Area, Humbug Spires Wilderness Study Area, West Pioneer Mountains Wilderness Study Area. Additionally, 33 sites are open to the public for access to managed private lands.
