Unit L regulates hunting opportunities for elk in Michigan and covers 5,405 square miles. Public lands comprise 587 square miles (11%) of the total land covered by this hunt management unit. The greater region is best serviced by Presque Isle, Alpena, and Cathro. The elevation of the region ranges from a low of 600 feet to a high of 1,500 feet above sea level. This area contains 61 campgrounds, and 13 public fishing access sites. There are 3 trailheads that provide public gateways to these forested areas: Huron National Forest. Additionally, 12 sites are open to the public for access to managed private lands.
