Zone 3 regulates hunting opportunities for deer in Kentucky and covers 3,010 square miles. Public lands comprise 589 square miles (20%) of the total land covered by this hunt zone. The greater region is best serviced by Lexington, Kirksville, and Richmond. The elevation of the region ranges from a low of 600 feet to a high of 1,600 feet above sea level. Wildfires have burned nearly 381 acres here in the last two years, providing opportunities for new vegetation and attracting a variety of wildlife. This area contains 17 campgrounds, and 27 public fishing access sites. There are 24 trailheads that provide public gateways to these forested and wilderness areas: Daniel Boone National Forest, Clifty Wilderness. Additionally, 96 sites are open to the public for access to managed private lands.
