Unit 1 regulates hunting opportunities for elk in Kansas and covers 422 square miles. Public lands comprise 188 square miles (45%) of the total land covered by this wildlife management unit. The greater region is best serviced by Elkhart, Rolla, and Richfield. The elevation of the region ranges from a low of 3,200 feet to a high of 3,600 feet above sea level. Wildfires have burned nearly 702 acres here in the last two years, providing opportunities for new vegetation and attracting a variety of wildlife. This area contains 1 campgrounds, and 2 public fishing access sites. Additionally, 84 sites are open to the public for access to managed private lands.
