The Panhandle zone regulates hunting opportunities for wolf in Idaho and covers 7,780 square miles. Public lands comprise 4,928 square miles (64%) of the total land covered by this game management unit. The greater region is best serviced by Coeur D'Alene, Post Falls, and Hayden. The elevation of the region ranges from a low of 1,800 feet to a high of 8,600 feet above sea level. Wildfires have burned nearly 855 acres here in the last two years, providing opportunities for new vegetation and attracting a variety of wildlife. This area contains 85 campgrounds, and 11 public fishing access sites. There are 75 trailheads that provide public gateways to these forested and wilderness areas: Clearwater National Forest, Coeur d'Alene National Forest, Kaniksu National Forest, Kootenai National Forest, Lolo National Forest, Saint Joe National Forest, Crystal Lake Wilderness Study Area, Grandmother Mountain Wilderness Study Area, Salmo-Priest Wilderness. Additionally, 14 sites are open to the public for access to managed private lands.
