The Pioneer zone regulates hunting opportunities for elk in Idaho and covers 3,205 square miles. Public lands comprise 2,526 square miles (79%) of the total land covered by this game management unit. The greater region is best serviced by Hailey, and Galena. The elevation of the region ranges from a low of 4,800 feet to a high of 12,400 feet above sea level. Wildfires have burned nearly 2,121 acres here in the last two years, providing opportunities for new vegetation and attracting a variety of wildlife. This area contains 14 campgrounds, and 5 public fishing access sites. There are 21 trailheads that provide public gateways to these forested and wilderness areas: Challis National Forest, Sawtooth National Forest, Appendicitis Hill Wilderness Study Area, Corral-Horse Basin Wilderness Study Area, Craters of the Moon National Monument Wilderness, Friedman Creek Wilderness Study Area, Jerry Peak West Wilderness Study Area, Jerry Peak Wilderness Study Area, Sawtooth Wilderness Study Area, White Knob Mountains Wilderness Study Area. Additionally, 53 sites are open to the public for access to managed private lands.
