Area 33-1 regulates hunting opportunities for elk in Idaho and covers 2,543 square miles. Public lands comprise 2,465 square miles (97%) of the total land covered by this game management unit. The greater region is best serviced by Galena, Cascade, and Idaho City. The elevation of the region ranges from a low of 3,000 feet to a high of 11,600 feet above sea level. Wildfires have burned nearly 130,539 acres here in the last two years, providing opportunities for new vegetation and attracting a variety of wildlife. This area contains 66 campgrounds, and 1 public fishing access sites. There are 54 trailheads that provide public gateways to these forested and wilderness areas: Boise National Forest, Challis National Forest, Sawtooth National Forest, Sawtooth Wilderness, Sawtooth Wilderness Study Area, Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness.
