Area 21-1 regulates hunting opportunities for deer in Idaho and covers 6,211 square miles. Public lands comprise 5,760 square miles (93%) of the total land covered by this game management unit. The greater region is best serviced by Salmon, and Baker. The elevation of the region ranges from a low of 2,800 feet to a high of 12,400 feet above sea level. Wildfires have burned nearly 1,264 acres here in the last two years, providing opportunities for new vegetation and attracting a variety of wildlife. This area contains 72 campgrounds, and 7 public fishing access sites. There are 87 trailheads that provide public gateways to these forested and wilderness areas: Beaverhead National Forest, Bitterroot National Forest, Boise National Forest, Challis National Forest, Salmon National Forest, Sawtooth National Forest, Targhee National Forest, Corral-Horse Basin Wilderness Study Area, Eighteen Mile Wilderness Study Area, Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness, Goldburg Wilderness Study Area, Jerry Peak West Wilderness Study Area, Jerry Peak Wilderness Study Area, Sawtooth Wilderness, Sawtooth Wilderness Study Area, Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness. Additionally, 11 sites are open to the public for access to managed private lands.
