Area 40-1 regulates hunting opportunities for antelope in Idaho and covers 6,013 square miles. Public lands comprise 4,839 square miles (81%) of the total land covered by this game management unit. The greater region is best serviced by Boise, Nampa, and Meridian. The elevation of the region ranges from a low of 2,200 feet to a high of 9,200 feet above sea level. Wildfires have burned nearly 404 acres here in the last two years, providing opportunities for new vegetation and attracting a variety of wildlife. There are 6 trailheads that provide public gateways to these forested and wilderness areas: Humboldt National Forest, Big Jacks Creek Wilderness Study Area, Bruneau River Wilderness Study Area, Duncan Creek Wilderness Study Area, Horsehead Spring Wilderness Study Area, Jarbidge River Wilderness Study Area, Little Jacks Creek Wilderness Study Area, Little Owyhee River Wilderness Study Area, Lookout Butte Wilderness Study Area, Middle Fork Owyhee River Wilderness Study Area, North Fork Owyhee River Wilderness Study Area, Pole Creek Wilderness Study Area, Sheep Creek East Wilderness Study Area, South Fork Owyhee River Wilderness Study Area, Squaw Creek Canyon Wilderness Study Area, Upper Deep Creek Wilderness Study Area, West Fork Red Canyon Wilderness Study Area. Additionally, 2 sites are open to the public for access to managed private lands.
