Zone Core regulates hunting opportunities for elk in Arkansas and covers 3,570 square miles. Public lands comprise 718 square miles (21%) of the total land covered by this hunt zone. The greater region is best serviced by Harrison, Berryville, and Green Forest. The elevation of the region ranges from a low of 400 feet to a high of 2,500 feet above sea level. Wildfires have burned nearly 4,538 acres here in the last two years, providing opportunities for new vegetation and attracting a variety of wildlife. This area contains 44 campgrounds, and 2 public fishing access sites. There are 10 trailheads that provide public gateways to these forested and wilderness areas: Mark Twain National Forest, Ozark National Forest, Buffalo National River (Lower Buffalo Unit) Wilderness, Buffalo National River (Ponca Unit) Wilderness, Hurricane Creek Wilderness, Leatherwood Wilderness, Richland Creek Wilderness, Upper Buffalo Wilderness.
