Thimble Peak via Sycamore Reservoir Trail

Thimble Peak is a challenging hike located in the Pusch Ridge Wilderness near Tucson, Arizona. Thimble Peak is most commonly approached by taking the Sycamore Reservoir Trail. The hike to Thimble Peak is 10.1 miles long and gains over 2,400 feet of elevation.This hike begins at the Gordon Hirabayasha Campground parking area off of the Catalina Highway. Begin hiking south on Molino Basin Trail. Almost immediately, you will reach a junction with Soldier Trail #706 and go right. After 0.2 more mile, you will reach another junction and take Sycamore Reservoir Trail #39. Continue hiking uphill for 0.9 miles until you reach Shevre Saddle.Stay on the Sycamore Reservoir Trail. You will now be hiking downhill and enjoying views of the Santa Catalina Mountains for the next 1.2 miles. You will be able to see the Sycamore Canyon Dam here. After 0.7 miles, take a left onto Sycamore Basin Link Trail. Follow this trail for 0.3 miles before staying left to connect with Bear Canyon Trail #29.Stay on Bear Canyon Trail for 0.6 miles. You will reach a junction with an unnamed trail. Go right here to head towards Thimble Peak. Follow this trail for about 1.1 miles as you hike up the ridge to the base of Thimble Peak. From here, there are spectacular views of Bear Canyon, Tucson, and the surrounding mountain ranges. This is where most hikers finish their hike. Retrace your steps to return to the trailhead.Thimble Peak is open year-round and has no associated fees. Dogs are allowed on this trail as long as they are on a leash. This hike can get very hot, so be sure to bring plenty of water. Hiking to Thimble Peak is a difficult adventure, but the stunning desert scenery makes it well worth the effort.
