The trail is mostly gravel but has sections of boardwalk and a dirt road. This hike is 3.2 miles long and gains 242 feet of elevation. This hike starts from a parking area off of Haast Hwy. There is a toilet at the trailhead. Begin hiking east on Monro Beach Walk. You will be hiking through a green rainforest. Shortly after the hike begins, you will cross a suspension bridge over a creek. Continue through the forest. You often will hear birds singing in the rainforest. After 0.1 miles, you will come to a junction and turn right onto a dirt road. Stay on the road for about 0.1 miles before coming to another junction. Follow the sign for Monro Beach Walk to the right. Continue hiking through dense rainforest. This part of the trail has multiple sections of boardwalk. As you continue on the trail, hills will start to rise on your right and left. 1.4 miles of trekking will bring you to Monro Beach. From Monro Beach, you will see rock formations to the left and right in the Tasman Sea. You will also encounter informational signs about penguins that nest in the area. If you are lucky, you may even spot some of these elusive birds. Be sure to be quiet and keep your distance as the penguins are easily spooked. From here, turn around and retrace your steps to return to the parking area. The Monro Beach Walk is open for hiking year round. There are no associated fees to hike here. Dogs are not allowed on this hike. The Monro Beach Walk is a nice hike to a secluded and scenic beach.
