Description
This trail starts at Eaton Saddle along the Mt. Wilson-Red Box Road and descends on a former road now singletrack trail through both burned (the 2009 Station Fire) and unburned sections of forest. After one mile the trail makes a big turn southwest and passes through a shady section of oaks and bigcone spruce then emerges into open chaparral of chamise, ceanothus and manzanita. Further down it enters a shady oak forest on a north facing slope with switchbacks ending at the Gabrielino Trail (NRT) 11W14. Valley Forge Campground can be reached by continuing down (west) on the Gabrielino Trail and taking the spur trail on the right. The Valley Forge Trail is a great option for doing various loop hikes on the north side of Mt. Wilson. A popular route is to start at Eaton Saddle then take the Gabrielino Trail (NRT) 11W14 back to Red Box using a short car shuttle.
