The Sawtell Road is closed from the fall until the spring. You can access the area on snowmobiles or snowshoes in the winter.
Visited 6/3/25 and the main Sawtelle Peak road is closed (with an iron gate and unfriendly sign) near FR 4550, which is also gated. It seems like developers have taken over this entire area
Path Type
Point to Point
Turning off the highway, you'll travel over 9 miles almost to the top of Sawtelle Peak on a gravel road. There is a bend in the road before the top and a small turnout parking area with a trailhead sign. The trail starts going downhill on the west side of the parking area. A gentle grade downhill with some uphill and then more downhill down to Lake Marie. You can go off-trail and get to Mt. Jefferson above the lake, but it will all be off-trail until you get on the east ridge.
