The Bear Canyon Trail begins just outside Bozeman at the Bear Canyon Trailhead and climbs steadily into the Custer Gallatin National Forest. Starting in a dense, shady forest alongside Bear Creek, the trail follows a narrow canyon for the first stretch before climbing through steep switchbacks into higher elevations. After the initial ascent, hikers reach more open terrain with glimpses of the surrounding Gallatin Range. Around halfway up, a signed junction offers a connection to the Mount Ellis Trail, or the route can continue to meet the Chestnut Mountain Trail for those linking longer day hikes near Bozeman.
Wildflowers are abundant in early summer, and wildlife sightings, especially moose and black bear are possible in quieter hours. Much of the route stays within the tree line, but the upper sections break into open meadows with sweeping views westward. Snow may linger in the upper canyon into early summer, and steep terrain makes traction important during the shoulder seasons. The route’s steady climb rewards hikers with quiet forest walking, wildlife-rich habitat, and broad mountain vistas.
