Description
The Coalpits and Scoggins Wash Loop is a moderately difficult hike located in the Zion Wilderness Area near Rockville, Utah. This lollipop loop explores desert canyons and offers views of some peaks in Zion National Park. This hike is 8.3 miles long and gains under 1,000 feet of elevation.This hike starts at the Coalpits Wash Trailhead off of W Main St. This dirt pullout only has room for a few cars. Begin hiking north on Coalpits Wash Trail. As you hike towards the boundary of the Zion Wilderness Area, you will parallel Coalpits Wash. Travel gradually uphill amongst sagebrush, cottonwoods, and junipers for 1.8 miles before reaching a junction. Stay right to take the Scoggins Wash Trail. Follow along the meandering creek as the wash gets more narrow. You will cross over the creek multiple times and enjoy views of Zion National Park. After 1.5 miles, you will reach a junction and go left onto the Chinle Trail. Continue hiking uphill for 0.7 miles to reach the highest point on the trail. This section of trail provides spectacular views.Hike downhill for 1.9 miles before reaching the end of the Chinle Trail. Head down into Coalpits Wash and hike south. Once again, you will be crossing the creek multiple times. Follow along the wash for 1.7 miles before reaching the confluence of Scoggins Wash and Coalpits Wash. Take a right onto the Coalpits Wash Trail and follow it back to the trailhead.The Coalpits and Scoggins Wash Loop is open year-round and there are no fees to hike in the Zion Wilderness. Dogs are not allowed on this trail. This trail has very little shade and can get very hot, so be sure to bring plenty of water. The Coalpits and Scoggins Wash Loop is a great opportunity for hikers to experience beautiful desert scenery while avoiding the crowds of Zion National Park.
