The Datil Well Trail is adjacent to the Datil Well campground. This recommended route includes all three designated trails and viewpoints, with scenic views of the San Agustin Valley to the east, and the VLA visible in the distance. The north loop trail and south loop trail are well marked and more frequently traveled, while the southern lower trail receives less traffic and is a bit more primitive. The northern segment of the route is primarily in juniper and ponderosa forest while the southern loop incorporates the nearby grasslands. Rocky outcroppings provide natural vista points.
Datil Well was an important rest stop on cattle drives from the east to the railroad in Magdalena that functioned as the point of sale. The present day campground is a formalization of the original cattle drive camp. A small visitor center at the campground provides further detail on the historical significance of the site.
