Description
The Upper Miller Trail start (as shown in this description) is at a gate along the park road, just before the road reaches the open central area of Mt. Madonna County Park. From this gate, take the fire road style trail into the forest, to a nearby trail junction with Blue Springs Trail. Go left here, at the signpost pointing the way along Upper Miller Trail. Continuing on in the forest, the trail runs close to the park road, but because the forest is so dense, the road can only be heard, not seen. Rock Springs Trail is soon passed on the right. Just after Rock Springs Trail, at the 0.15 mile mark, Upper Miller Trail crosses the park road and bends right to run along the road for the next 0.15 miles. Along this stretch, the trail emerges from the forest to pass picnic and parking areas. This open stretch is at the gently rounded top of Mt. Madonna whose summit is at 1,900 feet. At the 0.3 mile mark, Upper Miller Trail crosses the park road again, and heads away from the road at a trail signpost (also marking the start of Lower Miller Trail). Upper Miller Trail soon re-enters the mixed redwood forest. Descending gradually for the next 0.4 miles, Upper Miller Trail ends at an unmarked trail junction with Loop Trail.
